President Yoweri Museveni has pardoned 79 prisoners who have been detained in different correctional facilities across the country.

In a letter dated January 3, 2022 and signed by President Museveni, in accordance to the constitutional powers under Article 121, section (1), sub section (a), and on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, Museveni directed the Commissioner-General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija to release the listed prisoners.

The group includes one Venezuelan national and a UPDF officer, Priv. James Awany who has been incarcerated at Luzira Upper Prison.

Presenting the letter to journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru, the Prisons Spokesperson Frank Baine said that the 79 prisoners have been pardoned on medical and humanitarian grounds.

In 2020, President Museveni pardoned 833 prisoners countrywide through the Prerogative of Mercy as a measure against the spread of COVID-19 by decongesting the prison facilities.
