As the world still struggles to control the spread and find a cure to Covid-19, the Catholic Church in Rome has issued guidelines to be followed while administering Ashes at the beginning of this Lenten season on February 17, 2021.

Among the measures to control the spread of Covid-19 is the call for minimal person-to-person contact, now the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in Rome has released a note offering guidelines for use on Ash Wednesday, encouraging sprinkling of Ashes on the head.

In a co-signed note by the Congregation’s Prefect, Robert Cardinal Sarah, and its secretary Archbishop Arthur Roche, the Church leaders highlight that the priests will have a formula of prayer for all congregants present done only once as it appears in the Roman Missal, applying it to all in general: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel”, or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” according to the note released on Tuesday January 12, 2021.

The Congregation further says that  the priests  will proceed, first by putting  on  a  face  mask  and  distributes  the ashes to those who come to him or, if appropriate, he goes to those who are standing in their places while maintain social distance and sprinkles ashes on the head of each one without saying anything.”
