The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has distanced itself from allegations of planning to collect taxes from the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi’s donations.

Last year, the Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga showed concern over allegations indicating that URA plans to levy taxes on the Kabaka’s donations, something he greatly condemned.

Today, the Commissioner General URA, John Musinguzi Rujoki disclosed that they do not have any plans of levying taxes on the Kabaka’s gifts from his subjects and to show that they are committed to this, he revealed that they have bought a certificate from Buganda kingdom worthy shillings 5 million.

Musinguzi also disclosed that they only levy employment, business and property taxes and added that anything regarding donations they cannot tax it.

He disclosed this after holding a closed meeting with the Katikiro Mayiga at the Kingdom’s main seat at Bulange Mengo.

It should be recalled that last year, Buganda kingdom collected shillings 1.5 billion as donations for the Kabaka from his subjects under different arrangements such as “Luwalo Lwaffe”.

The Katikkiro appreciated URA for their gesture towards supporting Buganda’s efforts and appealed to them to use taxpayers’ money responsibly.

He also urged Ugandans to pay taxes to the Government in order to fund national development projects which include; roads, hospitals, schools, among others.
