The Democratic Party (DP) has lashed out at the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) for asking Ugandans to pay for replacing or getting new Identification cards (IDs) yet Parliament allocated funds to this effect.

Addressing the media at the party headquarters in Kampala, the acting DP Spokesperson, Ismail Kiirya says Parliament passed shillings 370 billion for printing new national IDs and if the alleged demand of shillings 40,000 for a new ID and shillings 200,000 for replacing a lost ID is true then its fraud at its best.

Kiirya says this exercise should be free of charge and the national IDs should not have an expiry date since they are supposed to be issued to Ugandans who will forever remain bonafide citizens.

It should be recalled that NIRA announced a mass renewal of the National IDs that are left with months to expire this year 2024 and in the next program the new IDs will have embedded features like DNA and others.
