As the country joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Teachers’ Day on Wednesday, the Uganda Professional Science Teachers’ Union -UPSTU has called for inclusion of Secondary Head teachers and their deputies on the new salary structure.

This financial year, the government declared a 300 percent salary increment for science teachers in secondary and other post-primary institutions.

The increment saw graduate science and Grade V Teachers’ pay pushed to Shs4 million and Shs3 million up from Shs1.1 million and Shs 796,000 respectively.

Addressing a press conference in commemoration on the teachers’ day in Kampala, UPSTU President Vincent Elong said the top administrators in Schools should be considered just like it was done to other heads of learning institutions in the National Teachers’ Colleges -NTC, Primary Teachers’ Colleges- PTC and Technical, Vocational Education and Training -TVET.

Elong says that some of the secondary school head teachers and their deputies are science teachers and conduct lessons but they were left out in the new salary enhancement yet they qualify to the list.

He further calls on the government to pay at least 500 science teachers who have missed out on the recent payments as well as ensure non science teachers are also considered in terms of increasing their salaries.

Commenting on the Teachers’ day on Wednesday, Politicians among them the Uganda People’s Congress- UPC President Jimmy Akena have challenged the government to improve on the welfare of all teachers starting with equal salary enhancement, and work on technological enhancement to support teachers in the digital edge.
