The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has confirmed starting on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Masaka-Mutukula road in a month’s time.

This has been revealed by the Executive Director UNRA Allen Kagina while appearing before COSASE chaired by Medard Ssegona after MPs on the same committee raised a matter of concern on when the said road will be constructed due to it bad state yet it’s an inter-connection route between Uganda and Tanzania.

In response ED Kagina said that the delay in construction was due to the withdrawal of the initial funder the African Development Bank and later the responsibility shifted to the government of Uganda which had no resources by then.

However, she has confirmed to the committee that the Ministry of Finance has warranted funds to UNRA and last week the solicitor general cleared the contract, currently UNRA awaits signing of the contract with the contractor this week.

Government approved a pre-financing of over Shs691bn out of the Shs1.52 trillion required in rehabilitating the 89.5kms of Masaka-Mutukula road to the Chinese contractor Chongqing International Construction Corporation-CICO.
