The Uganda People’s Defense Forces -UPDF have repatriated the two soldiers that were recently sentenced to death and the other three awarded 39 years of imprisonment for killing innocent civilians in Somalia.

 

Court Martial in Somali capital Mogadishu found the two Ugandan soldiers guilty of killing seven Somalis in August in Goloweyn while serving under the African Union peacekeeping mission (AMISOM).

 

In a statement issued by the African Union -AU over the weekend, the five had to be repatriated from Somalia to Uganda to serve their sentences.

 

Addressing the media at Police headquarters in Naguru today, the UPDF Deputy Spokesperson Lt. Col Ronald Kakurungu, confirmed the arrival of the soldiers saying that the country will implement the ruling of the court martial in Mogadishu.

 

In a related development Lt Col Kakurungu noted that the UPDF is still maintaining its presence and security at the border on the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC and at Nyakabande where some DR refugees are still held as their screening exercise is ongoing.

 

Meanwhile, Lt Col Ronald Kakurungu rallied the public to be aware of the terrorists’ threats in the country and he appealed to the people to follow the terror guidelines which were released to the public by the police.
