President Yoweri Museveni has pledged support for the manufacturing of tractors in Uganda if the country is to achieve its mission of agro-industrialization.

 

While launching agricultural machineries at Namalere Agricultural Institute in Wakiso District, President Museveni said that Uganda is currently looking at manufacturing some parts of tractors within the country and in the near future the entire tractor should be produced from here to cut expenses incurred in purchasing them from the developed countries.

 

Speaking at the same function, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze noted that this project is intended to assist farmers improve agricultural productivity.

 

Currently the sector’s contribution to GDP stands at only 23 percent despite employing nearly 80 percent of Ugandans.

 

He also adds that under this project farmers can hire equipment at about 60 percent discount of the market prices.

 

In total the Government has given out 150 tractors and 100 motorcycles that are going to be used by project inspectors to and in total the equipment is worth 48.5billion shillings.
