The Uganda Bureau of Statistics -UBOS insisted that the country attained lower-middle-income status amid the World Bank report released last week.

The World Bank in its 19th Uganda Economic update released on the last day of the financial year 2021/22 indicated that the country was yet to achieve the required figures to join the Middle-Income countries, Middle Income Status.

The report outlines Uganda’s per capita income at USD 850, as opposed to the USD 1,045 stated by President Yoweri Museveni during the State of the Nation Address on June 7.

The UBOS Executive Director, Chris Mukiza told the Journalists at the Statistics House in Kampala that they disagree with the World Bank on the methodology used in determining Uganda’s economic status.

Mukiza emphasizes that the report by the government is based on the financial year 2021/2022 official data while the World Bank used the previous financial year 2020/2021.

Mukiza says that the World Bank also used wrong population projections of 47.1 million Ugandans yet the current government official data has 42.1 million people in the country, which could have made them mess up.
