The situation in Kampala is still tense following protests that ensued moments after it was learnt that the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu a.k.a Bobi Wine had been arrested in Luuka.

Kampala has been closed to business after groups of youths stated attacking any shop that was found open and destroying posters and effigies especially of the presidential candidate of NRM Yoweri Museveni along Ssebaana road, Kiseka Market, Ndeeba, Mengo and other parts of Kampala. Supporters blocked roads with tyres which they set of fire.

Protests have also spread to Nyendo town in Masaka.

Kyagulanyi was arrested in Luuka district this morning while addressing a campaign trail, which according to the police, was against the Electoral Commission directive of having not more than 200 people. He was transferred to Nalufenya in Jinja

Police and the military have been deployed massively in and around Kampala and have been firing teargas and bullets to disperse the growing crowds since lunch time.

This started after an hour when the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochora the Director Police Operations AIGP Edward Ochom had announced a ban on political campaigns that have consistently defied the Electoral Commission (EC) guidelines in an address before the press at the Uganda media center.

Recently, police accused the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) parties for defying EC guidelines by conducting rallies that risk people’s lives into contraction of COVID-19. He said they have compiled video clips as evidence to all those who have violated the SOPs and have dispatched a team of security officers to disperse and arrest those that will continue engaging in such rallies.

Ochom has also confirmed the arrest of (NUP) flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu in Luuka district using the Counter Terrorism Police Unit commanded by Mwesigwa Frank as he approached the Luuka district headquarters grounds where he was scheduled to campaign today.

Police surrounded Bobi Wine’s car and covered it all with anti-riot shields before breaking into it, forced him out and later taking him away.

Ochom insists that police officers provided to every presidential candidate won’t protect them from any sort of criminal aspect by those defying the Electoral Commission guidelines just like
