Government has condemned protests that erupted in several parts of the country following the arrest of National Unity Platform presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi yesterday in Luuka where he was for his campaigning program.

Following Kyagulanyi’s arrest by police over the violation of Coronavirus guidelines and detention at Nalufenya police station in Jinja, protests erupted in Kampala and later spread to several parts of the country, Masaka, Mityana and Mukono.

The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Judith Nabakooba in a press briefing this afternoon described yesterday’s incidents in which 3 lives were lost and property destroyed as unfortunate and need to be avoided.

Police issued a statement showing 3 people were killed yesterday and by the close of the day today November 19th 2020 the number had risen to 16 while about 65 were seriously injured in the situations where people directly attacked  police officers who were trying to restore order,” . She says the incident is really unfortunate and foolish for some of the protesters to turn their anger onto security officers.

Nabakooba urged members of the public to cooperate with security in identifying the ring leaders of the chaos that saw a lot of property destroyed and lives lost.

She however asked all the presidential candidates to adhere to the Ministry of Health and Electoral Commission guidelines on the prevention of the spread of the deadly virus.
