The territorial Police at Wandegeya are investigating an incident where a tear gas canister accidentally exploded in the hands of Richard Ssebugadde, 22, a medical student and resident of Lumumba hall.

The incident was reported to Police yesterday at about 5:49pm by the Dean of Lumumba Hall.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson explains that on Tuesday, their officers engaged and moved with students to Wandegeya Police station to help secure bond for their colleagues that had been detained at the same facility.

After securing the bond, Police escorted all the students back to the university at Lumumba hall and they all went to their respective rooms of residence, and order was restored according to Owoyesigyire.

He however says that at about 5:49pm, police received information of the injured student who is currently admitted at Mulago Hospital after allegedly picking up a tear gas canister that blasted off his hand.

Owoyesigyire says that a task team of investigators is currently looking into the matter to establish the exact cause of the explosion and how it came about.
