Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has released on bail five lord councilors who were arrested on February 3rd 2022 over protesting against the eviction of Kampala street vendors.

The five KCCA councilors are part of a group of 14 councilors who were arrested in Kampala last week as they walked to meet vendors who had been evicted from the streets.

Among those released today are four female councilors and Gaddafi Nasur who told the court that she had been assaulted by the police during the arrest.

They were charged with inciting members of the Public to riot against KCCA enforcement officials who were removing vendors off the streets of Kampala City.

The five have been released on a cash bail of 500,000 shillings each and two million shillings for each of the two sureties not cash.

Others who gained their freedom include; the Speaker Zahara Luyirika, Winnie Nansubuga, Rose Kigozi, Fausta Nalubega and only male councilor Gadaffi Kamya.

The Grade One Magistrate Sanula Namboozo said the bail for the four women councilors was based on the ground that they are mothers and needed to take care of their children while the only male councilor released portrayed injuries inflicted on him during the arrest that needed to be treated.

However, all male councilors remained on remand at Kitarya prisons until February 14th when they will reappear for mention of the case.
