The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has stripped privileges from Opposition Members of Parliament who have deliberately boycotted plenary sittings.

While communicating to the House, the Speaker issued a directive that Opposition MPs on boycott should not even attend committees, travels and they should not attend the EAC games slated for 7th December 2023.

She further directed that members of accountability committees usually chaired by Opposition MPs should vote new Chairpersons for business to continue.

However Rule 157(7) of the Parliamentary rules stipulates that the official Opposition party (with the largest numerical strength) appoints the Chairpersons and Deputies of the Accountability committees which are; The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises, the Public Accounts Committee PAC and Committee parliamentary committee on Government assurance. It is not the work of the speaker as she alleges.

Among further warned Opposition MPs who clock-in for registration and disappear without attending Parliament saying she will publish their names.

The Opposition MPs in Parliament went on a boycott of plenary sittings in protest against Government security agencies violating their rights by kidnapping and illegally detaining their members as political prisoners.
