An angry mob has lynched an elderly man in Masindi accusing him of poisoning his colleague to death.

The mob victim has been identified as Lawrence Onen, 70, a resident of Nyakyanika village in Labongo parish of Labongo Sub County. The incident happened on Monday evening.

The mob accused Onen of poisoning Geofrey Vitha, a resident of the same village.

Vitha died from his home on Sunday evening after battling stomach complications he was experiencing on Friday last week.

Residents suspected foul play accusing Onen for poisoning Vitha.

Angered by Vitha’s death, residents raided Onen’s home, beating him to death.

They looted his household items before torching his grass thatched house.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, says that when police arrived at the crime scene, Onen had already breathed his last breath.

According to Hakiza, police picked up Onen’s body and that of Vitha and conveyed them to the Masindi general hospital mortuary where they are currently laying pending postmortem.

Hakiza has cautioned residents to desist from mob justice, stating that in most cases innocent people are killed.
