The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda-IRCU calls for amendment of the Marriage Bill to include clauses that empower religious leaders to intervene in misunderstandings of married couples before they divorce.

This has been disclosed by Andrew Lugoloobi, a Board member of the Inter-Religious Council saying that the existing law disempowers religious leaders by directing wedded couples with disagreements to court for divorce without any religious intervention.

The Bill was introduced by Tororo Woman Member of Parliament Sarah Opendi, who was granted leave by the House to review it and come up with a law that affects all recognized marriages in Uganda, including Christian, Islam, Hindu and Bahai among others.

According to proposals of the Marriage Bill (2022), a spouse willing to divorce a partner can only do so after a year.

Lugoloobi further disclosed this at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala ahead of the launch of the 1st edition of the Inter Religious Family Festival 2024 scheduled for 29th June at Kololo ceremonial grounds under the theme; “Celebrating Family, Faith, Freedom – One Family Under God For African Renaissance”.

He also disclosed that during this day, they will also tackle issues that have led to the increased cases of divorce among families citing economic imbalance, education, unemployment, family background, and misinformation among others.
