The Minister for Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni has encouraged eligible candidates wishing to repeat the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams under the old lower secondary curriculum in 2024 to take the opportunity and register once announcements are made.

The 2023 UCE examination was the last to be administered under the old curriculum, meaning that from 2024 October/November examination, the UCE will be administered in accordance with the New Lower Secondary Curriculum which is competence based.

In the past, candidates who would not have made it in an examination such as this one would repeat the examination in the following examination season.

In order to address the challenges this transition poses the board will administer a one-off transitional examination which will be administered later in the year, the exact date of which will be communicated by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).

While releasing the UCE results at Nakasero State Lodge on Thursday, Kataaha Museveni who is also the First Lady of Uganda noted that UNEB is to undertake further study of the situation and formulate a road map and make a communication to the public once it’s ready as soon as possible to enable preparations for registering those who are to repeat S4 this year.

She expressed gratitude towards the team for the work done; that she says has enabled a smooth shift from the closure of the old lower secondary curriculum end of cycle examination.

A total of 349,459 students registered to sit the UCE exams in 2023, which was visibly lower than the 364,467 students who sat the same exams in 2022. At least 14,879 scored ninth division meaning they failed the examinations
