The Ministry of Health has confirmed a total of 790 cases of red eyes disease also known as Conjunctivitis cumulatively diagnosed in the affected schools and prison facilities in Kampala and surrounding areas.

During a press conference at the ministry headquarters in Kampala, Dr Daniel Kyabayinze the Director Public Health says that 711 cases have been declared as recovered, giving a recovery rate of 90%.

According to Dr Kyabayinze, the outbreak has been identified in several schools in Uganda’s capital, Kampala and 8 prison facilities with affected divisions of Nakawa and Rubaga within Kampala district.

He says the affected prisons include Luzira Upper Prison, Murchison Bay Prison, Kassanda Prison Kaweeri Prison, Lira main prison among others.

Dr. Kyabayinze however explains that some of the symptoms of  Red Eyes disease include; itching, white discharge, not wanting to go out or look into the sun among others thus advising the public to avoid congested places that would cause a high infection.

Dr Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health says they have tasked Dr. Kyabayinze to investigate more about the disease but appealed to schools to ensure that they encourage students to keep clean by washing their hands since it’s the only preventive measure.
