About 60 percent of people presenting themselves for cancer diagnosis have been found at stage four, St. Francis Hospital Nsambya has disclosed.

According to experts, stage 4 cancer usually can’t be cured because it’s normally spread throughout the body by the time it’s diagnosed and it is unlikely to be completely removed.

Dr. Andrew Ssekitooleko, the Chief Executive Officer of St. Francis Hospital Nsambya speaking to the journalists at the Open Day within the hospital premises, says that they have over 3,000 people who are starting, undergoing and on treatment but among these, 60% presented themselves with stage 4 cancer.

He says cancer tops the list of non communicable diseases that are affecting people hence calling for more focus on cancer awareness by the responsible stakeholders.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ssekitooleko explains that the Open Day event is intended to give back to the public and also receive feedback on their medical service delivery.

Maria Nkalubo, the Principal Operations Officer in the Department of Emergency Medical Services in the Ministry of Health encourages health facilities to organize such Open Days just like Nsambya hospital has done to interact more with their clients and to enlighten them on why it’s important to always seek medical advice whenever they are unwell.
