Parliament has passed a law transferring powers of conducting civil marriage registration from the Uganda Registration Service Bureau to the National Information Registration Authority (NIRA).

The law is called the Registration of Persons Amendments Bill, 2024.

It also mandates NIRA to register all faith-based and customary marriages.

The Bill has been tabled before parliament by the State Minister of Internal Affairs Gen David Muhoozi and passed by parliament chaired by the Speaker Anita Among and the commencement of the duties will be with immediate effect after the president assents on the bill.

Before Parliamentary business, there was observance of a moment of silence in respect to the demise of the Kenyan Chief of Defense Forces Gen Francis Omondi Ogolla along with nine other high profile soldiers who died in a plane crash as it took off on Thursday afternoon in the north-west of the country in areas of Elgeyo-Marakwet in Chesegon Village.

The motion to the above expression of sympathy has been moved by Iganga Municipality MP Peter Mugema Panado in parliament this morning.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among regretted the incident and sent condolences to the counterparts in Kenya.

The four-star general will be buried on Sunday at his home in western Siaya County in Kenya, his family has said.
