President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the campaign to create more employment opportunities for Ugandans.

In his Labour Day speech read at the national celebration in Namutumba, Museveni said that the focus on such a day should be on how many job opportunities have been or will be created if Uganda is to deal with the unemployment problem in the country.

According to a report recently released by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, one in every two Ugandans in the working age bracket is jobless. Only 10 million out of 23.5 million Ugandans capable of working have a job to do while another 1.3 million Ugandans who are employed are actively seeking for jobs elsewhere.

President Museveni said that Government is banking on programs like the Parish Development Model-PDM, Youth Livelihood Programme, Emyooga and support for commercial agriculture to solve Uganda’s persistent unemployment problem.

The Labour Day celebrations have been held under the theme; “Promoting Positive Work Culture and Ethics: A Prerequisite for Increased Investment, Employment Opportunities and Household Income”.
