The 11th Parliament has this morning received sad news of the demise of one of their colleagues, the Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal.

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among in a message posted on X formerly Twitter has confirmed the death of Hon. Cecilia Ogwal who for long served as a Member of Parliament for Lira Municipality.

The Speaker Among in a message says the House has lost a Mother, Mentor, and role model; Imat Cecilia Atim Ogwal, before sending her sympathies to her dear husband and the family, friends, the people of Lango.

Ogwal 77, is said to have been battling cancer for some time and died from India where she was admitted a while ago.

 

The former UPC Iron Lady commonly known as Imat Cecilia in Lango, she was also a member of the Constituent Assembly and she also served in the Pan-African Parliament.

Cecilia Ogwal served as the Assistant Secretary General at the Uganda People’s Congress. During that time, she openly opposed the monolithic movement system of the NRA which had banned political parties by the infamous article 269 of the 1995 Constitution. Her activism was more pronounced during the Constituent Assembly; it was around that time that she was nicknamed “UPC iron Lady”.

Members of Parliament are sending condolence messages among them is Allan Mayanja Ssebunya of Nakaseke Central, Fred Kayondo of Mukono South who have described Cecilia Ogwal as a seasoned politician who has played her role in the development of Uganda.
