Ministry of Health (MOH) is worried of the possible outbreak of Ebola in Uganda ahead of DR. Congo’s general elections slated for 23rd December 2018

  1. Congo government revealed yesterday that 542 Ebola cases had been recorded in the province of North Kivu, 494 of which have been confirmed.

Of the 319 believed to have died from the virus so far, 271 have been confirmed ahead of the December 23rd general elections, an exercise that is likely to cause an influx of Congolese refugees in Uganda.

Dr. Miriam Nanyunja, the World Health Organization (WHO) Disease Prevention and Control officer in Uganda says although Uganda is still Ebola free, they have intensified surveillance at the DR Congo boarder routes to handle probable Ebola cases that might be identified more so during both the Congolese elections and the Christmas season that will cause several movements.

Meanwhile Dr. Nanyunja advised male Ebola Survivors to avoid having unprotected sex, because they are still capable of carrying the virus in semen for a period of one year that puts their partner at a risky.

The Minister for Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng indicated that  all the 350 suspected cases reported in the country were detected negative with more than 2000 front line health workers in the Seven high risk districts bordering DR Congo including Kasese, Bundibugyo,Ntorokoand others been fully vaccinated.
