The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi has launched the International Labour Organization Convention 189 on Domestic Workers Rights with the aim of fighting for the rights of employees who are suffocating under their employers.

She launched this during the 10th National Organization of Trade Unions-NOTU Congress of 2023 saying that employees are equally important like other workers whose rights have to be protected and vowed to ensure that the same will be tabled in cabinet.

She applauded the outgoing NOTU leadership led by Usher Wilson Owere for the able leadership they have demonstrated during their tenure and appealed to the incoming leadership to avoid colliding with employers and end up failing to address the interests of workers.

Amongi disclosed that they have inspected various factories across the country but employees informed them that they get accidents and injuries but they are not compensated since they do not have access to Labour Officers.

She appealed to the new NOTU leaders to ensure that employees have social security since many lack contracts despite many working for various companies for over 5 years, hence remaining casual workers.

Currently the elections for the new NOTU leaders are ongoing with the incoming Chairman General of NOTU, Musa Okello and the Secretary General Richard Bigirwa going through unopposed and they are waiting to be endorsed by the over 300 members attending the congress in Kampala.
