The Catholic Church in Uganda has got the third university the first one being Uganda Martyrs, University of Kisubi run by the Brothers of Christian Instructions and the latest St. Joseph University found in Mbarara Archdiocese.

St. Joseph University located along Mbarara Isingiro road envisions producing graduates mainly in the technical professions based on the license by the National Council for Higher Education-NCHE that was acquired in November 2017 and started operations in August 2018.

Archbishop of Mbarara His Grace Paul Kamunza Bakyenga has been installed as the first Chancellor, and says the university will focus mainly on vocational courses to produce job makers and will accommodate all students irrespective of their religious affiliation despite being a Catholic founded university.

President Yoweri Museveni who officiated at the installation of Archbishop Bakyenga called on the administration of the new University to focus on equipping students with skills that will enable them compete effectively in the job Market as well as having the ability to create their own jobs.

He contributed 200 million shillings towards the construction of a science complex at the University.
