Makerere University has finally spoken out about the approved restructuring and phasing out of at least 18 undergraduate programmes saying it was decided by the council in a move to reduce on the number of courses offered from 82 to 64 courses.

 

Earlier today, the memo circulated on social media indicating the new curriculum will take effect in the next academic year that starts in August 2021.

 

The following bachelor programmes will be phased out include; Library and Information Science, Archives and Record Management, Science in construction management, Community Psychology, Industrial and Organization Psychology, Arts in Development Economics, Science in Telecommunication Engineering, Science in Computer Engineering, Environment Science, Science in Meteorology, Development Studies, Adult and Community Education, Business Statistics, Science in Population Studies, Science in Quantitative Economics, Science in Wildlife Health and Management, Science in Agricultural Land Use and Management as well as Science in Horticulture.

 

Speaking to the media at Makerere University, the MaK Director of Quality Assurance Dr Vincent Ssembatya attributed phasing out exercise to enhance quality at the university and spur research.

 

He has said that the university intended to increase the percentage of science, technology, engineering and mathematics students from 35 percent to at least 40 percent of the total enrolment.

 

However, he emphasizes that more undergraduate diplomas and degrees will be phased and will be left to other public and private universities.
