The opposition Democratic Party (DP) has advised government to prioritize commercial farming for economic and social development of the country.

Recently World Bank, in its Global Economic Prospect report for 2021, said Uganda’s agricultural sector will be among the most resilient sector this year and Uganda will be among the five countries in the sub Saharan Africa that will experience the least contraction in agriculture.

Addressing the media at party headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday, DP Spokesperson Opio Okoler said that according to the World Bank prospects, it implies that agriculture can support Uganda’s economy through ensuring foods security, boosting household incomes and commodity exports if more funds in the national budget are allocated to agriculture.

Opio adds that agriculture has been a key economic safeguard in the face of sever shocks resulting from Covid-19 so this must be a clear example why Agriculture budget must be improved.

On the other side Opio challenged the government to allocate funds for feeding learners if it’s to improve on quality of education in the country.
