Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has refuted allegations made by traders in Nakawa market accusing it of being behind the fire that caught their market in the wee hours on Monday.

According to traders, they allege that KCCA has on several occasions requested traders to leave Nakawa Market Zone D to pave away for the construction of toilets but they refused on claims of not having been given a new location as an alternative.

Traders also alleged that their refusal to vacate the area could have caused the arrest of their chairperson Joseph Mudhasi last week.

While reacting to traders’ allegations in an interview, Eng. David Luyimbaazi, the KCCA Deputy Executive Director noted that the authority can’t participate in such inhuman act though their plan is to evict traders and give space for redevelopment of the market.

Eng. Luyimbaazi says that there might be a click of people who want to politicize the fire with their own agendas that KCCA.

On the arrest of Mudhasi, Eng. Luyimbazi disclosed that he was arrested by police for violating the presidential directive that ordered all leaders of that market including Mudhasi to stay away from management offices for KCCA to appoint new leadership.

The Nakawa West Member of Parliament doubling as the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi appealed to the police to speed up the investigation to know the cause of the fire and appealed to traders who have lost their merchandise in stores to form an ad hoc committee that will spearhead the compensation process thus giving them Sh2 Million to help in restoration of businesses.

Over 100 traders have lost their merchandise in stores worth millions of shillings in   fire that has caught in Nakawa market zone D today and various Nakawa division leaders have visited the site.
