The minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni, says they are determined to ensure that they defeat the practice of cheating exams.

This was in response to the results of 1,035 candidates whose results have been withheld due to examination malpractice that was largely in science practicals in Physics and Chemistry and Mathematics where collusion among candidates, impersonation and script substitution were detected as the common cases.

In her speech at the release of UCE results Janet Museveni also said that her Ministry acknowledges the poor performance in Biology, which has been re-occurring through subsequent releases of the UCE results.

She said the matter is currently being addressed through the intervention of Curriculum Reviews which is aimed among others doing away with obsolete information, reducing subject content overload and contact hours in the classroom, so as to create time for research, talent development and creativity among other things with a hope of improving the learner’s performance.

Similarly, the Ministry notes that this year the overall performance in the Science subjects that are compulsory is not yet satisfactory although there is some improvement.

Government is committed to promoting the teaching and learning of science subjects and the Ministry of Education and Sports, will look into this matter and where necessary re-examine the policies to address areas of concern to improve on science.
