Cabinet has approved a decision to increase the pay of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) political leaders in the forthcoming financial year.

The new payment scale will see the KCCA councilors who have been earning 3 million shillings and the Lord Mayor who has been on 12 million shillings per month get a 15% increment.

The Minister for Information, Technology, Communications and National Guidance, Frank Tumwebaze says this increment in the emoluments of all KCCA political leaders will not in any way impact on the salaries paid to political leaders in other districts.

However, some Councilors like Faridah Nakabugo and Ismail Ddamba both from Rubaga South have expressed mixed reactions on the increment of their salaries fearing that it would be with a hidden agenda to compromise the opposition dominated council.

The decision by cabinet comes at a time when doctors, teachers, prosecutors and other civil servants are advocating for salary increments but are yet to receive a positive response from government.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Kampala Betty Namisango Kamya refuted the claims saying salaries for KCCA political wing won’t be increased in this 2018/19 forthcoming financial year since they haven’t settled some critical issues.

In the financial year 2018/2019, KCCA seeks to run a budget of shs470billion, a decrease from this year’s shs479billion.
