The Kalungu West Member of Parliament Joseph Ssewungu has advised the Minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala to first improve the road network infrastructure in the country before threatening to arrest drivers.

This comes at the time of increased road accidents with the latest life claimed during this Christmas festive season due to either indiscipline of the road users or poor roads.

The latest fatal accident happened on the boxing day yesterday where Seven lives were lost, Five on the spot and two others died from the Nkozi hospital following a road crash at Kibukuta Swamp, Kayabwe along the Kampala-Masaka highway when a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UBM 489B and a Mercedes Benz registration number UAM 445B which were both moving from Kampala to Masaka District side, knocked each other according to police.

Ssewungu says that instead of threatening to arrest drivers, the minister should first track clearance of hotspots on the roads, install road signs, construct and maintain the poor state of road networks and also equip the traffic police.

He further proposed that the government should adopt modern traffic technology by installing cameras on highways to monitor indiscipline road users like elsewhere.
