In a bid to reduce air pollution in the country, the Government has come up with air quality monitoring equipment aimed at measuring the amount of bad air Ugandans breathe, especially in urban areas.

This has been revealed by Prof. Engineer Bainomigisha from Makerere University noting that they have so far allocated at least 120 equipments in various urban centers especially in Kampala city.

According to air quality data from the monitoring system, in the last seven months pollution increased to its peak in January this year across the country with Kampala registering higher pollution levels compared to Jinja and Fort Portal cities with the main drivers of air pollution including; gasses from industries, poor quality fuel among others.

Ivan Kimuli from Makerere University Lung Institute notes that due to continued air pollution, many people have become asthmatic putting their lives at a health risk, with over 13,000 people dying of the condition as a result of air pollution.
