National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is demanding government entities over 81bn shillings in water bills as of January 2024.

This has been revealed by the Deputy ED NSWC Johnson Amayo in an interaction with the parliamentary Health Committee chaired by Charlse Ayume to discuss the accumulating utility bills in government hospitals.

Eng Amayo informed the committee that 18 referral hospitals owe NWSC over 15 billion shilling and the Uganda Police Force respectively.

Mulago referral hospital is indebted with over 3bn, China Uganda Friendship Hospital over 1bn, Jinja Hospital over 3bn, Mulago specialized women hospital over 2bn among others that include Masaka, Mbarara, Gulu.

It’s from this revelation that Eng Amayo suggested to the committee that all the water bills owed by government entities be considered in the coming financial year 2024/25 to lift the burden from public hospitals and other entities to avoid future disconnections by NWSC.
