The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga has condemned the arrest, torture and the violation of human rights by law enforcement officers as they hide in the fight against the spread of Covid-19.

Mayiga made the remarks in an urgent press conference at Bulange Mengo noting that the ugly scenes that were witnessed yesterday of beating and killings, were avoidable, hence calling for the violations to stop since they undermine the peace across the country.

He adds that the fight against Covid-19 shouldn’t be at the price of losing Ugandan lives.

The Katikkiro also wondered why musician Moses Ssali a.k.a Bebe Cool and other artistes are not tear gassed and arrested when they hold processions in various parts of the country as it has been seen during this campaign season.

His comments come after National Unity Platform’s presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu was arrested from Luuka district and he’s still in Police custody at Nalufenya as NRM supporters are holding processions in Kotido where NRM’s Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is campaigning today.

Meanwhile Lawyers under their mother body Uganda Law Society have put in place a committee of twenty lawyers in Kampala and others in various parts of the country to offer a free legal support to the all victims who were brutalized since the arrest of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

Speaking to the media in Kampala, Uganda Law Society president Pheona Wall condemned actions of security agencies calling upon the electoral commission to convene the situation.

She implored the general public to desist from the acts of looting and stay calm and peaceful.

She assured that after gathering necessary information all who were involved in brutalizing Ugandans will be prosecuted on individual basis calling upon electoral commission come out with a way forward according to what has exactly happened despite.
