The East African Community (EAC) is set to send independent inspectors to Nimule-Elegu border to inspect Ugandans maize.

In May this year, the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards impounded 62 trucks loaded with maize grains, maize flour and wheat on allegation of failing to pass the test for contamination with aflatoxin.

Speaking to the press in Kampala, the Minister in charge of the East African Community doubling as the First Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga confirmed the progress though failed to confirm on when this will be done.

She however recommended the South Sudan government for having released the trucks and cargo they had impounded and also pardoned them to be tested by independent inspectors at the Elegu border.

Kadaga also recommends the establishment of a public and private sector forum laboratory to deal with such issues.

Recently, Ugandan grain dealers under their umbrella body, the Nation Millers Association suspended food exports to South Sudan over the trade crisis at the Nimule border, where more than 70 maize-laden trucks have been stranded for nearly two months after the Ugandan northern neighbour raised quality concerns.
