The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime – UNODC has noted that there is a need for collective efforts to combat organized crime and drug abuse across borders.

According to officials at the Office, organized crime and illegal activities affect rights to peace, order and good governance and that no community is immune from the effects of such illegal activities.

The head of the Office in Uganda, Sharon Nyambe while launching a new five-year Country Programme titled, “Strengthening Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Uganda” said that countries should strengthen the rule of law through crime prevention and the promotion of effective, fair, humane and accountable criminal justice systems.

The Permanent Secretary to the Judiciary, Pius Bigirimana wants the Police’s Criminal Intelligence Directorate and the Director Public Prosecutions to speed up the prosecution process to enable the court to deliver their verdict in time.

The Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera speaking at the same function revealed some of the challenges they face in the judicial system.
