As the world  struggles to control the corona virus pandemic that is partially attributed to poor sanitation, Ministry of health through the Environmental Health Department has declared every last Saturday of the month as a public national cleaning day at all levels from villages upwards.

Delivering her presentation at the Monthly Media Breakfast meeting in Kampala, the Ministry’s Commissioner for Environmental Health Julian Kyomuhangi announced this saying that 75 percent of the disease burden is attributed to environmental health and poor sanitation.

She says that it is one’s responsibility to take part in the national cleaning day and practice hand washing with water and soap to ensure personal, domestic and home hygiene in order to avoid contraction of diseases.

Statistics indicate that 37% of Ugandans don’t wash their hands during critical times like after using toilets, after cleaning children buttocks before eating food while 22% and 19% households have no toilets by local and global standards respectively.

Meanwhile, today has marked the commencement of the sanitation week though the main celebrations will be held this Friday 20th March in Bulambuli district at Bulengene primary school playgrounds.
