The Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Paul Semogerere wants government to provide accountability for all donations received from well-wishers to counter effects of Covid-19.

In the wake of Covid-19, government rallied Ugandans to donate in all possible ways so that the adverse effects of Covid-19 could be addressed.

Many were seriously affected by the Covid-19 induced lockdown to the extent of others losing their employment.

However the latest is that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has terminated its Covid-19 cash transfer programme in Uganda. The programme was to benefit 120,000 Ugandans who lost livelihoods because of the coronavirus pandemic. Each beneficiary was to receive 100,000 Ugandan shillings ($26; £20) every month for three months.

The US embassy there said the decision followed the Ugandan government’s indefinite suspension of GiveDirectly, a non-profit organisation that was conducting the programme.

President Museveni also instituted a national Coronavirus task team coordinated by the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and at least UGX 21 billion was collected in cash, food, PPEs and brand new vehicles, however the use of UGX 21billions is to date not known.

Now, while delivering his sermon during Mass to close October, the Holy Month of the Rosary, at Kankoole-Kiwamirembe in Kikyuusa Parish, in Kasana-Luweero Diocese, Bishop Semogerere said that there are those simply profiting from Covid-19.

According to Bishop Semogerere, the donations started on a good note when the President asked Ugandans to contribute but after it was never the same:
