The Police in Busoga North have arrested Ndimuloodi Tiya, a UPDF soldier for allegedly attempting to rob ‘mercury’.

Private Tiya, attached to the Fisheries Protection Unit-FPU on Lake Kyoga is currently detained at Buyende Police Station.

His arrest follows the death of Fredrick Ngobi, the Director of Citizens of Hope Primary School in Buwenge Town Council who was killed by an angry mob after attempting to steal ‘mercury’.

Ngobi was killed alongside his friend Julius Kiirya with whom they jointly hatched a plan of hiring Tiya to surround the home of 70-year-old, Mutwaire Bamwegombye, a resident of Busiike village, in Buyende district and rob ‘mercury’ from him.

The thugs stormed Mutwaire’s house on Sunday and asked him to surrender all the mercury in his possession.

But Mutwaire tricked them and upon entering his bedroom, he called his friends who rushed to his home.

Upon noticing the raging crowds, the Tiya and other robbers fled in a saloon car, abandoning Ngobi and Kiirya in the hands of the angry mob.

The Busoga North Police Spokesperson, Michael Kasadha says that they have recovered an SMG rifle and 82 rounds of ammunition from Tiya and have appealed to the public to avail the police with intelligence information, which will lead to the possible arrest of other suspects.
