Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has disowned the Crime preventers recently assigned to the reserve forces in the army by President Yoweri Museveni.

This comes after the Members of Parliament (MPs) on the Parliamentary Defense Committee grilled officials from the Defense Ministry on the legality of recruiting of the former Police crime preventers into the army.

In reply, the State Minister of Defense, Charles Engola said that the crime preventers aren’t part of UPDF but they are working out measures of incorporating them in the army.

The Shadow Minister for Internal Affairs the Butambala County MP Muwanga Kivumbi also accused UPDF of operating a torture chamber at Mbuya barracks where hundreds of Ugandans are said to be blind folded, beaten and tortured in the process of extracting information from them.

However the State Minister for Veteran Affairs under the same Ministry Bright Rwamirama has denied the accusation promising to investigate it further.
