The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has handed over 50 SIM Card Verification Machines to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to help in verifying Ugandans who want to replace their SIM cards after a Cabinet directive to that effect.

The Deputy Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, Col. Shaban Bantariza says that cabinet resolved yesterday that these machines be deployed in various parts of the country to easy the verification of people seeking to replace their lost SIM Cards.

Bantariza adds that with effect from next week these machines will be working in the different places that will be communicated.

Last month UCC announced a ban on the application for new SIM cards without prior verification of one’s National Identification Number as a way of curbing the increasing criminality by people using unregistered SIM Cards.
