Over 6,000 leaders are to face the Leadership Code Tribunal for failure to declare their wealth.

The Inspectorate of Government directed leaders from the LC3 level to the President to declare their wealth from 1st-31st of March this year but out of these 31,642 leaders only 25,420 had declared.

Speaking to the press at the Uganda Media Centre the IGG, Beti Kamya also highlighted that 50% of the institutions had a declaration compliance rate of 100% while 13 institutions performed below 50%.

She adds that they have started writing to those who didn’t declare to explain themselves with genuine reasons and if they fail they will face the Leadership Code Tribunal that will decide on their punishment.

Among the penalties that they could face is; demotions, losing their jobs, being banned from serving in any public office for 10 years and fines of up to Sh1m or a year in jail.

Meanwhile, Kamya adds that during the exercise they faced challenges like low levels of computer literacy particularly from Local Government leaders and public service, no updated database of leaders that delayed the registration of the leaders on the online system, declaring at the last minute among others.
