400 Congolese Refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC have been relocated to a Bubukwanga Refugee Transit Camp in Bundibugyo District.

More than 3,000 individuals had been registered following attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces-ADF rebels on communities in Kichnaga, Watalinga County in Beni District on November 14. The group, mostly comprising women and children, entered the district through Butoogho and first camped at Butoogho Primary School and Butoogho Sairi Church of Uganda.

But more than 1,000 of these are now reportedly being hosted by their relatives across the District while others are suspected to have crossed back to their home country.

Bundibugyo District Vice Chairperson Joel Bwambale appealed to all communities that are hosting the refugees to report them to the Local Council and security leaders to ensure that they are all transferred to the transit centre. He says that all refugees need to be thoroughly screened and put in a well-managed place for health and security reasons.

Francis Ssenyondo, the District Refugee Focal Person says that the district, working with other agencies is trying to ensure that all asylum seekers are transferred to Bubukwanga and even those hosted by relatives are screened and documented for management.

He added that working with the Office of the Prime Minister, the centre has been equipped with water, food stores and a medical screening area to avoid a possible disease outbreak.
