The Western Region Youth Member of Parliament Edson Rugumayo says there is little to celebrate about Labour Day especially amongst the youth.

While addressing journalists at Parliament, Rugumayo said Labour Day celebrations make no sense when 8 million Ugandan youths are currently unemployed.

He adds that even the little funds invested in the different Government empowerment programs like the Parish Development Model and the Youth Livelihood Program among others have been marred by corruption hence not benefiting the youth.

Rugumayo has also challenged Government to address the issue of skill mismatch caused by the foreign theoretical teachings in our schools which has greatly contributed to the increased youth unemployment.

He further asked Government to come up with measures to protect new businesses started by youths which in most cases do not survive beyond their first birthday due to high taxes.

Meanwhile, the Central Region Youth MP Agnes Kirabo has reiterated the need for Government to deploy the intern doctors who recently petitioned Parliament.

It’s from this that the youth MPs have promised to engage all stakeholders to ensure that the intern doctors are adequately deployed.

The National Labour Day celebrations were held in Namutumba District under the theme; “Promoting Positive Work Culture and Ethics: A Prerequisite for Increased Investment, Employment Opportunities and Household Income”.
