Wobulenzi town council in Luweero District passes a motion, to charge all aspiring candidates before they are permitted to display their campaign posters ahead of next year’s polls.

This was during a council session presided over by the speaker Godfrey Katende, at the town council headquarters in Wobulenzi.

The session was convened after two weeks when Irene Nakamatte, the Wobulenzi town clerk had issued a notice warning that all aspiring candidates are not allowed to display their posters before they meet town council conditions.

According to the notice dated August 14, 2020, the town clerk details that those aspiring for MP seats must pay shs100,000/= district LC V aspirants, town council & sub county seat Must pay shs50,000/= while the rest of the category including councilors are supposed to first pay shs 30,000, among many other charges.

In the same document, the town clerk shows the bank account on which they are supposed to deposit the money & thereafter deliver the bank slips for the next step.

This did not go down well with some of the targeted.

One of them Sam Serunjoji aspiring for the Wobulenzi Town Council LC 3 chairman describes it as greed for money, adding that he won’t pay to have his posters pinned.

According to the council, this was one of the targeted local revenue sources for this financial year, as general elections draw closer.

Additionally, council was concerned that many papers will be littered in the town, thus the need to raise money to help in garbage collection.
