Voting is taking place in Kayunga district to elect its next LCV Chairman.

In most areas voters turned up as early as 6am but had to wait until the 7am the stipulated time for voting starts, although even the election materials had arrived in time.

At some of the polling stations near the Kayunga referral hospital in Kayunga town, the polling materials arrived at around 7:30am but had to wait for some minutes for the required number of voters to arrive.

Whereas many had anticipated heavy security deployment , the situation is however different with a few deployments, especially near key installments like the police station and the district headquarters which will act as the tally centre.

Yesterday, the Electoral Commission Kayunga Returning Officer, Jennifer Kyobutungi identified eight hotspots that could be a source of violence in the district but security is on high alert.

She identified, Bbaale, Kayonza,Kitimbwa, Kayunga subcounty, Kayunga town council, Kangulumira, Nazigo sub county and Nazigo town council.

Whereas there are six candidates are in the race, the close contest is between the NRM’s Andrew Muwonge and NUP’s Harriet Nakweede.

Other candidates in a by-election to replace the late Muhammad Ffeffeka Sserubogo, whose lifeless body was found dangling on a tree in June a month after occupying the office, are Anthony Waddimba (DP), and Boniface Bandikubi, Jamir Kamoga, and Majid Nyanzi, all independents.

Kayunga District has got three Constituencies; Bbaale with 5 sub counties, 30 parishes 135 polling stations and 72,363 voters.

Ntenjeru North has got 4 sub counties, 25 parishes, 116 polling stations and 66,924 voters

And Ntenjeru South with 4 sub counties, 16 parishes, 87 polling stations and 51,690 voters.

This gives a total of 338 polling stations and 190,997 voters believed to participate in today’s election.

The Opposition National Unity Platform NUP is accusing the State and its Security agencies over the arrest of several of their people deployed to protect the votes of Harriet Nakwede.

Those said to be arrested are Aloysius Mukasa, the Lubaga South MP, Charles Tebandeke, Bbaale County MP and Busujju county MP, Lukyamuzi Kalwanga.  The trio was reportedly arrested on Wednesday by unidentified security personal while transporting polling agents to various polling stations within the district.

Others are Daily Monitor Journalist, Michael Kakumirizi who had traveled to spend a night at Kayunga but was picked upon arrival, Julius Mutebi, the Mayor Kira Municipality, and Nakwede’s campaign manager, Ben Kyobe.
