The opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has pleaded to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to revise the implementation of the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solutions (EFRIS) system which has caused traders to close their shops in protest.

The protest entered the second day with traders affiliated with the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) Uganda and the Federation of Uganda Trader’s Associations (FUTS) closing their shops over EFRIS.

According to Jimmy Akena, the UPC President, the protesting traders haven’t understood the EFRIS system which URA should have focused on educating them about this e-receipting system.

Akena, who said this during a weekly press conference at Uganda House, said that the number of taxpayers in the country is still very small compared to the population of workers in the country which means that the aggrieved traders should be treated with respect.

He further requested the government to cut expenditures that are affecting the budget, posing the burden to Ugandans.

Akena believes that traders have never refused to pay taxes but one of their concerns is that even the high taxes imposed on them are not doing anything.
