Different University Student leaders have been arrested by police at parliament this Thursday afternoon as they attempted to petition the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among over increasing prices of essential commodities in the country.

Accompanied by the opposition Member of Parliament, University Student leaders led by the Makerere Guild President Shamim Nambasa before the arrest showed that their petition is a representation of the opinions, views and dissatisfaction of students from the higher institutions of learning which they say have affected their standard of living at universities.

Nambasa said that the petition seeks redress from the Parliament of Uganda and calling for major and fundamental steps to address the current crisis that is wrecking the economy and the lives of the ordinary Ugandans.

But, as they tried to access parliament from the main gate, they were stopped by police in charge of parliamentary security due to no evidence of appointment with the office of the speaker.

This didn’t go well as it resulted into exchange of bitter words between the police and former Commissioner of Parliament also Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake who accused the security officers of torturing the innocent students who were delivering a petition.

Zaake who looked charged and highly short tempered said that it was unfair for police officers to arrest and detain the students and they vowed to follow up until they are released.

Later, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the arrest of 11 students from Makerere University, Kyambogo University, and Makerere University Business School -MUBS and detained at the Central Police Station –CPS Kampala after having been found tied themselves with chains while donning blue and red gowns, matching to parliament without any invitation.

He says that the suspects are facing charges of inciting violence.
