The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has expressed its commitment to embark on following up employers who fail to implement the decisions in regards to the welfare of journalists.

This has been disclosed by the UHRC commissioner Crispin Kaheru while at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala saying they have received numerous complaints from journalists about their employers failing to pay salaries and other benefits contrary to the confirmation made during engagements with the commission.

Kaheru says employers have consistently refused to improve the welfare of the Journalists which is against the law that is why the commission has opted to follow up on the errant employers in various media houses.

He also called upon the government to provide support to journalists in whatever way possible for them to fulfill their work.

Kaheru disclosed this ahead of the World Press Freedom day scheduled for 3rd May under the theme; ‘journalism is the source of the environmental crisis.’

Last year, Parliament tasked proprietors and management of privately owned media houses to improve the welfare of their staff, especially journalists which would in turn act as motivation for quality work in the country.
