The Uganda Prison Services have refuted a report published by the local media indicating that the Human Immune Virus (HIV) prevalence in detention facilities is more than three times the reported national average.

The report allegedly drafted by the Parliamentary Committee on HIV/AIDs in March 2023, for instance states that in Dyanga Prison in Kiryandongo district, the Prison Facility recorded 18.7 percent, Gulu main prison 18.6 percent and Kitgum prisons 10 percent HIV prevalence respectively.

Addressing the media at Police headquarters in Naguru today, the Prison Spokesperson Frank Mayanja Baine says that the prevalence rate in detention facilities is similar to the national average of 6.5%.

He further quotes their last survey that he says is uploaded on the website, the prevalence rate among the female inmates is at 13% and 11% in males though testing is voluntary.

Baine says that sexual related activities which are the most causes of HIV infections are restricted in the detention facilities.
